Quick Look At Citrix Enterprise Browser

The Internet, an indispensable tool for many businesses, fosters innovation, communication, and the delivery of critical business applications. However, it also presents challenges for systems administrators tasked with protecting the business and end users from potential threats in the form of malware attacks, phishing scams, data breach, social engineering, compliancy risks, even end user productivity drain.

To help mitigate these risks, Citrix developed the Enterprise Browser.

So, what exactly is it? It’s a Chromium-based browser that can be configured with security policies pushed by IT administrators from Citrix Secure Private Access or the Citrix Global App Configuration service to end users or devices. Secure Private Access and Global App Configuration service are beyond the scope of this post so I won’t go into details here, however some of the policies that can be enforced when using them include restricting clipboard access, blocking download and uploads, preventing screen captures and displaying a watermark on the screen.

Citrix Enterprise Browser operates like any other popular browser. Being Chromium-based means it supports bookmarks, extensions, grouping tabs, incognito mode, microphone and webcam, and has a password manager.  It also supports internal web, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and progressive web apps like Office 365.

So how do you get it? If you’re running the latest version of Citrix Workspace App you already have it. For Windows, right click the Citrix Workspace App icon in the System Tray.

Launch CEB from Windows system tray

For Mac just click the Citrix Workspace App icon on the menu bar.

There’s also a stand-alone installer version of the browser, that doesn’t require a Citrix license to use. You can get it from the Citrix.com downloads page.

The browser can be upgraded independently of Citrix Workspace App. You can also use it independently of Citrix Workspace App; make it your default browser for all web related activities if you desire.

The real power though is when combined with Secure Private Access to provide end users with a secure browsing experience to their web or SaaS applications. This would be a good segue to a related topic about Remote Browser Isolation which I plan to cover in a future article. Great tease, right?
